Team penning is a western equestrian sport that evolved from the common ranch work of separating cattle into pens for branding, doctoring, or transport.

Today it is a fast-paced and
exciting event that gives a
team of three riders on
horseback from 60 to 75 seconds
(depending on the class or the
sanctioning of the event) to
separate three same-numbered
cattle from a herd of up to 30,
and put them into a 16' x 24' pen
through  a 10' opening, at the
opposite end of the arena.

The sport features up to 30 head
of cattle, typically yearling beef
cattle (mature cows or bulls are
not allowed), with numbers
affixed to their back, three each of each number 1 through 0. A run starts once the line judge has dropped his flag as the lead rider's horse crosses the foul line. At that time, the announcer gives out a randomly drawn number, such as "Your number is seven". The riders then know that they must cut out the three head of cattle that are wearing the number "7" and push them to the opposite end of the arena, and put them into the pen, and call for time.

Teamwork is the key with all three riders working in harmony to cut out the correct cattle and drive them to the pen while keeping the wrong numbered cattle back.

The history of the sport is thought to date back to 1942 when brothers Ray and Joe Yanez, along with Canadian cowboy Bill Schwindt were sorting steers from a herd of cattle on a Ventura County, California ranch. During a lunch break the trio reportedly came upon the idea of organizing what were routine cowboy chores into a competitive sport, one in which cowboys could showcase their horsemanship.[1]

The first organized competition is thought to have taken place at the Ventura County Fair in August of 1949.

The sport is widely promoted as the fastest growing western horse sport in the United States, Canada, and Europe.

(The primary team penning (and its sister discipline, Ranch Sorting), is the United States Team Penning Association (USTPA), headquartered in Ft. Worth, Texas. There are an estimated 93,000 active team penners in North America.)

Every Summer, Creek View Farm likes to take some time out from the busy Penning schedule and hold a "Fun Penning".

This is a great opportunity to give penning a try if it is your first time, or for the seasoned penners to start some young, up and coming horses. Mainly it is just a chance to relax and have a great time, no pressure.

Don't have a team?  That is no problem, because Teams are made by drawing names from a hat.  So no one is left out...and everyone mixes and matches!

On Saturday, when the tide is low, everyone heads down to the beach for a beautiful day on the Sand bars of the Northumberland Strait!  It doesn't get much better then that...Your dreams of galloping on the sandy beach in the calm waves of the Atlantic ocean will come true.

If you choose not to ride on the beach, Bruce always hooks up "Sonny and Cher" to the wagon, so no one is left behind.

Dry Work:  Known as the reining pattern, the dry work includes circles, lead changes and runs terminating in well-balanced stops, turns and a back-up with slight hesitations denoting each maneuver.  The Reined Work demonstrates the horse's obedience and willingness to respond to it's rider. This event also shows the horse's athletic abilities to perform the demanding cow work.
Example of the "Dry Work"

Cow Work:  Cow work includes three elements which must be completed in order. Boxing, which proves the ability of the horse to hold the cow. Turning on the fence at least once in each direction, with the rider being close enough to the cow to be the cause of the turn, And circling, or maneuvering the cow 360 degrees in each direction without interference from
the fence.    Example of the "Cow Work"
Ranch sorting is a timed event class consisting of two riders with the objective of sorting ten head of cattle from one round pen into another in a designated sequence. The team that sorts the most head of cattle in the correct order with the fastest time will be declared the winner!

Reined cow horse refers today to a
competition which has also been known
as Working cow horse. Horses are asked
to work a single live cow in an arena,
performing certain maneuvers that include
circling the cow and turning it in a specified
manner, as well as performing a reining pattern.
Today, horses in this kind of competition are referred to as "reined cow horses," "cow horses," "stock horses," as well as "working cow horses."
